We aren't sitting behind a desk determining rankings based solely on online reviews, corporate press releases, popularity or the number of locations a company operates. Our rankings are heavily influenced by real experiences during our travels.

 

We look at the complete experience. Is the store clean? Are the restrooms maintained? Are employees friendly? Is the food good? Is there a worthwhile selection? Is the property well maintained? Are there useful amenities for travelers? Is the experience consistent from one location to another? Most importantly, when we're back on the road, would we actually want to stop there again?

Every new visit gives us another opportunity to evaluate a brand and compare it with its competitors. And we call out these companies on good and bad visits. Someone has to hold them accountable. Companies can move up. Companies can move down. A company can even fall out of the ranking entirely. Likewise, a brand that previously didn't make the cut can earn its way into the rankings after impressive visits. The active ranking (Road Tour 10 page) is where you can see where things are stacking up for the upcoming official ranking, again it's a fluid ranking until official every January 7. 

 

That is important because businesses change. Management changes. Stores are remodeled. New concepts are introduced. Food programs improve. Customer service can get better—or worse. Cleanliness standards can rise or fall. A company that impressed us several years ago shouldn't automatically retain a top position forever simply because of its reputation.
